Can You Earn Money with AI Books on Amazon KDP? (2026 Guide)
Updated: 6 days ago
Updated 21 October 2026. Can an AI-assisted Kindle eBook earn money? Yes, if readers buy it and it meets KDP's requirements. But AI does not guarantee sales or passive income. Results depend on reader demand, originality, quality, rights, pricing, discoverability, and the time and money you invest.
Know KDP's AI disclosure rule before you draft
KDP says AI-generated text, images, or translations must be disclosed when you publish a new book or edit and republish an existing one. KDP still treats content as AI-generated when a tool created the actual text or image, even if you substantially edit it afterward.
AI-assisted work is different: if you create the content yourself and use AI to brainstorm, edit, refine, or check it, KDP says disclosure is not required. You remain responsible for accuracy, originality, and rights in either case. If you use AI-generated cover or interior artwork, include that in the disclosure.
A practical workflow for publishing an AI-assisted eBook
1. Choose a reader and a specific need. Research competing books and reader questions. Decide what experience, research, examples, or point of view will make your book useful in its own right.
2. Build a human-reviewed outline. Use AI to explore ideas if helpful, then check the structure against reliable sources and the reader's needs. Keep a record of sources for factual claims.
3. Draft and verify. If an AI tool creates actual prose, treat it as AI-generated for KDP disclosure. Fact-check every claim, quote, reference, statistic, and name. Remove fabricated citations and generic filler.
4. Add original value and edit deeply. Bring in your own examples and analysis. Check the complete manuscript for repetition, contradictions, readability, and whether the book delivers what its title and description promise.
5. Check rights for every asset. Use text, photographs, illustrations, and cover art that you have permission to publish. Verify that prompts or source materials have not reproduced someone else's protected work.
6. Format for Kindle. KDP's current guidance lists EPUB, DOCX, and KPF for reflowable eBooks, and EPUB or KPF for fixed-layout eBooks. KDP no longer accepts MOBI uploads. Choose the format that fits your book and follow the relevant formatting rules.
7. Upload and complete book details. Review the title, description, categories, territories, pricing, and AI-content questions in KDP. Describe the book accurately and use the AI disclosure option when the content is AI-generated.
8. Preview the converted book. Use KDP's Previewer to inspect the cover, table of contents, images, page breaks, links, and text on different screen sizes. Correct conversion problems and proofread the final version before publishing.
9. Price and promote responsibly. KDP offers 35% and 70% eBook royalty options. The 70% option has territory, list-price, and other eligibility rules, and delivery costs are deducted in eligible cases. Check the current pricing page and KDP's estimate for your book instead of assuming every sale earns 70% of its list price.
What affects real earnings?
Royalties come from eligible sales and are affected by the selected royalty option, marketplace, taxes, list price, delivery costs where applicable, refunds, and any price matching. Editing, cover design, formatting, research, and advertising can add costs. Estimate your break-even point using your actual costs and the royalty shown in KDP; do not treat a sales estimate as a guarantee.
A published book also needs accurate metadata and promotion to reach readers. Monitor reports, address reader feedback, and update the manuscript when necessary. Income is uncertain and usually takes ongoing work; avoid claims that an AI workflow produces effortless or guaranteed passive income.
Common outdated advice to avoid
• Do not upload a MOBI file for a new or revised Kindle eBook; KDP ended MOBI support.
• Do not assume substantial editing changes AI-generated content into AI-assisted content. KDP's distinction depends on who created the actual text or image.
• Do not assume every territory or book qualifies for the 70% royalty option, or that the 70% rate is calculated on the full list price.
• Do not publish AI output without checking facts, reader value, quality, and publishing rights.

I enjoyed the cover-making tutorials and the extra tips on how to store them for amazon kindle direct publishing (AKDP). Group cover-making is fantastic and will save a ton of time.
